QUESTION #4 Yahoo!

What would have happened if Yahoo did not include advertisements on their website? Would they still have been successful?

  1. Yahoo probably would not have made as much money. The ads did not cause users to stop using Yahoo, and companies were fighting for ad space. I do not think they would have been as successful if they did not open ad space. It was the right choice for the position they were in at the time.

    1. I agree that they would not have made as much money. Users still used Yahoo because they were amazed at what it could do, so advertisements were only a benefit to the company and their money.

  2. I do not think Yahoo would have been as successful without advertisements because they would have lost out on so much money. As a free site, there is no major income, and no advertisements would have led Yahoo to fall.

    1. I agree, without the ads they wouldn't have been able to afford upkeep, even with all their investors. new people were coming by the thousands a day and they needed some kind of sustainability.

    2. Aakash - I completely agree. Without ads yahoo would not have been able to survive.

  3. If Yahoo did not include advertisements on their websites, they would have no way to make money. They would not have been as successful without including advertisements on their websites because they would not be making revenue.

  4. I think they would've still been very successful (as in being a household name, not monetary success) because they were the first "dictionary" site like this. Since they were the first site to capitalize on this concept, everyone loved it and flocked to it. Since no other sites like this existed, I think it was successful for what it was, not for the ads they showed and the money they made because of them.

    1. But they needed to make money to support the infrastructure (servers, etc.) so they needed some sort of revenue.

    2. Erin Brady: I agree with this. Even though Yahoo obviously would not have made as much money without including advertisements, I think they still would have been a successful company.

    3. Riley: This is very true because Yahoo was the first catalog of websites so everyone would have known about them either way, meaning they would have been a household name whether they were making money or not.

If we define success monetarily, no. If we define it by the amount of users they reached, definitely. Even then though, without the income their idea would not have been sustainable. I think that they needed ads to survive, and then continue to be successful.

    1. This is an interesting point. They definitely would not have made as much money, but I agree that they would not have lost their loyal following due to their unique offerings. Still, I believe it was the right choice at the time.

    2. thats a really interesting point, i didn't think of the two different types of success but they definitely would have been just as user successful without ads

    3. Do you think if they weren't first they would have still been successful after adding in ads?

  6. If yahoo did not include advertisements on their website I don't think they would have been as successful. It seems like people are more likely to try new technology if its low risk, which means its free in this case. Without ads yahoo would not have been able to be free and grow to how big it became.

    1. Exactly. They needed ad revenue to grow their platform and popularity doesn't translate to more servers and locations.

  7. i think they would have stayed afloat a little bit longer if they hadn't added ads but they would not have been able to make as much money and eventually been eaten up by another company or probably bought out my microsoft

I agree in terms of monetary success they wouldn't have been very successful but in terms of being well known? Ultimate success.

  8. Riley: Yahoo would not have been as successful because their idea for a catalog could have easily been stolen and hard to make money off of as a company until they put advertisements on it. I think without advertisements, Yahoo would not have made any money because it was clear that the founders were not willing to make users pay for their service.

    1. YES! Their database could easily be replicated so they needed some way to make money that didn't rely on that data.

    2. That's so true! I'm sure that all the other people waiting in the sidelines would have been more than willing to implement ads. If Yahoo didn't do it, one of those guys would have without thinking twice.

  9. If Yahoo! did not implement advertisements into its directory, it would have been extremely difficult for the company to make money. From a business standpoint, it would have much more difficult and tedious for the company to reach the same point monetarily. Anyways, people didn't seem to mind much past a few days, lending to the idea that, as long as advertisements wern't in the way, people accepted them. Advertising this way was very smart for Yahoo!.

  10. I'm not sure they would've been successful considering the fact that there were already other platforms that did the same exact thing out there. Their advantage was that they were first with loyal users so even if they have advertisements people ended up being fine with it. So in that regard , I would say advertisements saved Yahoo.

    1. Yahoo did create a space that users could rely on and that was built on trust. However, I do agree that selling advertisement space was a financially a good move. Users were still content with the service, and businesses were content with their ads.

  11. I think that Yahoo would have still had some success, but advertisements increased their success tremendously. Ads never received negative feedback to the point that Yahoo would lose customers, which is ideal. Part of business is marketing and advertisements, so I think that the average person accepted the ads as inevitable and not extremely annoying.

    1. I agree, but I think they were smart to place ads only around the content and not inside of it. This minimized reaction from consumers.

    2. I think it's hard for us to know how people really felt at the time...we're so used to ads. So we kind of look at them as a given, and expect them. But if I was a user from the start and suddenly started getting ads that took up space and distracted me, I think it's very possible that I'd be annoyed.

    3. It is a good point to make because, yeah, if yahoo had lost a lot customers, they would have chosen to remove the ads in the sake of remaining successful as they were prior to adding ads, though they likely would not have been able to expand their platform.

  12. Yahoo would definitely not had been as successful without ads because they wouldn't be able to pull through money-wise without adverts. I suppose you could define success differently, as Erin Burke said. Still, it is a matter of thriving when it comes to being a search engine like yahoo, surviving is too easy.

  13. Similar to how AOL needed to adapt and integrate a flat fee, Yahoo needed to advertise in order to stay afloat. With more and more users, Yahoo needed to continue expanding, and it couldn't have done that with no profit. I think if they didn't advertise, people would know what Yahoo was, but it wouldn't have grown as big as it did.

    1. They had no choice. Eventually they'd need money and advertising was a proven model - good point.
